Search Engine Optimization means making your website, shop, and products "findable" when people search for you or what you sell. There are some steps you can take within and outside of Castiron to improve the likelihood that you will be found online.
Optimize Product Titles and Descriptions with Keywords
Action: Use clear, descriptive, and keyword-rich titles and descriptions for each product.
- Why: Search engines use titles and descriptions to understand what the page is about and to match it with relevant search queries.
- How: Include specific keywords that customers might use to search for their products. For example, instead of just "Cookies," use "Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies."
- Tip: Trying to do a search on Google with your title and seeing what comes up on search is always a good way to gut check if you have an effective title.
-
Adding SEO terms to your products:
- From your Products tab, click on an individual product
-
Within a product there are three tabs at the top: General, Variations, and SEO
- You can copy and paste the Google Preview URL into a browser to see how it looks in a search
- SEO Title refers to the title of your product
- SEO description is the short summary of the product that appears in a google search.
-
To create your SEO content for the product you have two options
- Create from scratch: Type in the product title and write an SEO-friendly description (Use tips found within this article). Hit Save button.
-
Click on box titled Same as Product Title and/or Same as Product Description to copy over the content from your general product details. Hit Save Button.
- To edit this content on the SEO page, uncheck the boxes to make changes. Hit the Save button.
Use High-Quality, Descriptive Images with Alt Text
Action: Upload high-quality images and use descriptive file names and “alt text.”
- Why: Images enhance user experience and engagement. Alt text helps search engines understand the image content, which can improve search rankings and accessibility.
- How: Name your image files descriptively (e.g., "gluten-free-chocolate-chip-cookies.jpg") and include alt text that describes the image in detail.
- Tip: Ensure the image file size is optimized for web use to avoid slow loading times.
Encourage Customer Reviews and Ratings
Action: Ask customers to leave reviews and ratings for products. The most effect way to set up reviews is to create a Google My Business profile, where customers can leave a review. This will also improve your Google search rankings.
- Why: Reviews and ratings build trust and provide fresh, user-generated content that search engines favor.
- How: Follow up with customers after purchase to request a review. Display these reviews prominently on the product page.
- Tip: Offer incentives like a discount on future purchases to encourage more reviews.
Leverage Social Media and Local Listings
Action: Share products on social media and claim local business listings.
- Why: Social signals can boost SEO, and local listings help in appearing in local search results.
- How: Regularly post about products on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Ensure the business is listed on Google My Business and other local directories.
- Tip: Use hashtags relevant to your niche to increase visibility on social media. Use the tools in the Social tab in your Castiron shop to make this efficient.
Create Internal Links to Related Products and Content
Action: Link to related products and relevant blog content within your product descriptions.
- Why: Internal linking helps search engines understand the structure of your website and discover all your pages. It also keeps visitors on your site longer by directing them to related content, which can improve engagement and sales.
- How: Identify related products or blog posts and include links to them within your product descriptions or on your product pages.
- Tip: Use descriptive anchor text (the clickable text in a hyperlink) that clearly indicates what the linked page is about.
Example:
- Internal Link in Product Description: "Pair these gluten-free chocolate chip cookies with our organic strawberry bars for a perfect snack."
